The Korea-Indonesia Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition will be held at Square One in Incheon on September 24th.

This exhibition consists of various works by 5 domestic artists and 11 Indonesian artists, allowing you to see unique and fresh works by young artists from both countries.

Humanities scholars say that art is the most important indicator of a country's potential and possibilities. This is because art contains the country's philosophy, people's values, and the history of struggle. Indonesia, which was ruled by Japan at the same time as Korea, is a country that has lived through turbulent modern times and is achieving rapid economic growth.

Currently, famous Korean companies are entering the market and seeking shared growth, and as economic growth accompanies it, the activities of artists are also attracting international attention.

Indonesia, where artists are growing the fastest in Southeast Asia, is currently experiencing a variety of cultural and artistic activities centered around Yogyakarta, which is called the cultural hub. Artists who grew up in Yogyakarta are making their names known all over the world, and have been introduced in Korea through international art events, including the Gwangju Biennale. Artists are active not only in Yogyakarta but also in Bali, which has a distinct cultural color. Bali, where most of the members are Hindu, is a representative tourist destination in Indonesia and is characterized by a variety of artistic activities taking place where various races and cultures come together, and young artists gather and grow together.

At the Korea-Indonesia Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition held at Square One in Incheon on September 24th, a large number of young artists with Indonesia's unique colors are invited and are receiving a lot of attention. This exhibition consists of various works by 5 domestic artists and 11 Indonesian artists, and the works of young artists from both countries can be viewed in one place.

Uniquely, the Korean-Indonesian contemporary art exchange exhibition is held digitally in line with the current situation where overseas visits and exchanges have become difficult due to the coronavirus. Instead of transporting and installing works, dozens of works are digitized and sent to a digital frame optimized for art appreciation, allowing the texture and color of the original painting to be enjoyed digitally as clearly as possible. While it has been difficult to introduce many original works due to concerns about damage, this exhibition has become more accessible to the public as it is easy to install and does not require a separate environment.

As the online exhibition is being held at the same time, the description of the work can be heard as a YouTube video containing an explanation of the work by simply scanning the QR code. The artist's explanation video, produced with the participation of a professional curator, will be available on YouTube from September 24th to October 4th, when the exhibition is on, so you can access the work even if you cannot visit the exhibition hall.

The exhibition curator said, “Even in the era of the coronavirus pandemic, when face-to-face contact has become difficult, cultural activities and exchanges are actively taking place online, crossing borders. For this exhibition, we invited artists from Korea and Indonesia who are active through social media. “It is a good way to learn more about the world of work by appreciating this digital exhibition and visiting the artists’ SNS. If there is a work you want to own, you can purchase it on the Blue Canvas website, a digital art trading platform,” he said.

This exchange exhibition, which provides a rich experience by comparing different cultures from the common concerns of young artists from both countries, is a part of the public-private cooperation overseas social contribution project promoted by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE), and is a project of Indonesian artists overseas. It is expected to be a cultural event aimed at laying the foundation for advancement and revitalizing cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries.
