도널드 트럼프 미국의 47대 대통령은 가장 강력한 글로벌 리더로서 세계에서 가장 추앙받는 대통령이다. 역대 최고령, 최고 부자 대통령이고 두 번째 징검다리 대통령 집권 기록을 세웠다.

 

미국 우선주의 강화정책을 펼치며 정치, 외교, 국방, 관세정책, 불법 이민 정책과 세계 평화를 위한 헌신에 앞장서고 있다. 주요 무역 협정을 성사시키고, 미국 경제를 그 어느 때보다 활발하게 성장시키고 있다. 러시아와 우크라이나 전쟁 종식과 이스라엘과 팔레스타인및 이란 핵 종결 등 다양한 평화 중재 역할을 하고 있다. 조만간 북한의 김정은 국무위원장과 만나 한반도의 평화와 비핵화, DMZ 관광 생태보존 등을 논의하리라고 본다. 지난 8월 25일 미국 워싱턴 DC 백악관에서 개최된 한국 이재명 대통령과 미국 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 정상 회담이 성공리에 종결되었다. 미국 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 폭넓은 아량과 이재명 대통령에 대한 호의적이고 친밀한 예우에 한국 국민 한 사람으로서 경의를 표하는 바이다.

 

이번 정상 회담에서 이재명 대통령과 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령 간대화의 장을 열어준 화제의 소재는 단연 ‘골프’였다. 딱딱하고 공식적인 분위기를 호의적이고 친밀한 우정의 장으로 만들어준 것이다. 빠른 시일 내 “김정은과 만나 대화의 물꼬를 트시고, 북한에 ‘트럼프 월드 골프장’도 지어서 골프를 치게 해달라"고 이재명 대통령이 제안하였다.

 

이에 대한 화답으로 트럼프 대통령도 “좋다 (That’s Good). 우리는 할 수 있다(We can do)”며 환하게 미소를 지은 뒤 이 대통령의 손을 맞잡았다. 그러면서 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 세계 평화를 위한 피스 메이커(peace maker) 역할을, 이재명 대통령은 평화 조력자 페이스 메이커 역할을 하겠다고 제안했다.

 

두 정상의 대화에 골프가 처음으로 언급된 것은 지난 6월 6일 트럼프 대통령과의 첫 통화에서 언젠가 만나 골프를 치자고 약속한 바 있다. 이번 정상회담에서 이재명 대통령은 트럼프 대통령이 골프광이라는 것을 간파하고 그의 신장, 체형 등을 고려해 맞춤형 수제 국내 브랜드 골드 파이브(Gold Five)에 ‘45, 47대 대통령’이라는 차수와 함께 도널드 대통령 이름을 새겨서 선물했다. 퍼터는 헤드 무게 360g, 길이 34인치, 가죽 그립을 끼운 일자형 퍼터이다.

 

이번 정상 회담에서 양측 골프 외교는 성사되지 않았지만 향후 어느 날인가 실현되리라 사료된다. 오는 10월 말에 열리는 경주 APEC에 트럼프 대통령이 참가를 표명하여 그때 골프 외교가 성사되었으면 하는 바람이다.

 

 

골프광 트럼프 대통령과 소유 골프장

지금부터 골프를 좋아하는 트럼프 대통령의 골프 사랑과 골프 외교, 골프 핸디캡 등 골프 이야기를 소개한다.

“Make America Great Again(미국을 위대하게 다시 부흥시키자)” 라는 구호를 정치 슬로건으로 내건 미국의 제45, 47대 대통령으로 선출된 도널드 트럼프 대통령은 자타가 공인하는 골프광이자 미국 포함 18개 골프장 및 리조트 소유자로 골프 열정이 대단하다.

 

미국의 Golf Week 매체에 의하면 2025년 5월 기준 미국 포함 전 세계에 18개 골프장을 소유한 것으로 나타났다(Take a look at the 18 prestigious golf courses Donald Trump currently owns all over the world). 트럼프가 직접 소유하거나 관리하는 골프장은 미국에 11개, 스코틀랜드 2개, 아일랜드 1개, 아랍에미리트(UAE) 4개, 인도네시아에 건설 중인 1개 등이다. 발리와 두바이 등에도 신규 골프장 건설을 준비하고 있다. 미국 PGA 투어가 2026년에 트럼프 대통령이 소유한 마이애미의 트럼프 내셔널 도럴에서 골프대회를 현지시간 4월 27일부터 5월 3일까지 개최할 예정이다. 

 

그는 320페이지 골프 레슨서 “TRUMP, The Best Golf Advice I Ever Received(트럼프, 현재까지 내가 받아온 최고의 골프 레슨)”이라는 책자도 2005년 발간했다. 그의 핸디캡은 공식적인 것은 아니지만 한때 2.6까지의 실력자였지만(Trump has a handicap index of 2.6) 지금은 나이 만 79세여서 아마도 핸디캡 9~11 정도라고 본다. 미국 역대 대통령 중 가장 골프를 잘 치는 대통령으로 자리매김되고 있다.

 

그의 골프경력은 18번의 클럽 챔피언과 5번의 홀인원, 베스트 스코어는 챔피언 티에서 66타를 기록한 것이다. 그는 펜실베이니아 대학 와튼 스쿨 시절 야구와 미식축구를 좋아하는 운동애호가였다. 정식으로 레슨을 받은 적이 없이 어깨너머로 골프를 익혀 그의 스윙은 교과서적이 아니다. 

 

그는 한때 181cm 키에, 야구 스타일(baseball swing)의 강한 스윙으로 드라이브 거리 280야드 전후를 날려 프로를 놀라게 했다. 만 79세인 고령임에도 지금도 비거리 200~230m 정도로 시니어로서는 장타자이다. 최근 트럼프와 라운드를 한 디셈보 프로에 의하면 그의 드라이버는 머신(machine)처럼 정확하고 아이언샷과 퍼팅 실력도 수준급이라고 평했다. 그의 싱글핸디캡퍼 비결은 탄탄한 그립(a solid grip), 몸통 스윙 (body swing ), 뛰어난 벙커 샷(excellent bunker shot), 월등한 퍼팅 실력(brilliant putter)이다.

미국 대통령과의 골프 외교가 성과가 좋다는 확신을 갖게 되자 각국의 정상들은 트럼프와 골프 외교를 중시하고 있다. 트럼프 대통령 본인도 각국의 정상들과 골프를 자주 활용하는 인물로 알려져 있다. 트럼프 대통령 1기 집권 시 일본 아베 전 총리와 재임 중 5차례나 미국과 일본 골프장에서 번갈아 가면서 골프 외교를 펼쳤다. 2019년 5월 지바현 모바라시에 위치한 골프장 ‘모바라컨트리클럽’에서 골프라운드 후 SNS에 사진을 올려 화제가 되기도 했다. 당시 일본 아베 총리는 황금 혼마 드라이버를 트럼프 대통령에게 선물했다.

 

트럼프 대통령은 2025년 7월 EU(유럽연합)와의 관세 협상을 위해 스코틀랜드를 찾았을 때도 스코틀랜드 턴베리 소재 ‘트럼프 턴베리 골프 클럽’에서 차남 에릭, 워런 스티븐스 주영 미국 대사와 함께 골프를 쳤다. 7월 27일 우르줄라 폰데어라이엔 유럽연합(EU) 집행위원장과 키어 스타머 영국 총리와의 만남도 스코틀랜드 북동부 애버딘 인근의 트럼프 골프장에서 이루어졌다. 

 

남아프리카공화국 시릴 라마포사 대통령은 지난 5월 트럼프 대통령과의 정상회담에 남아공의 대표 PGA 프로 골퍼 어니 엘스와 레티프 구센을 대동해 골프 화제를 필두로 대화를 이끌며 성공적인 회담을 성사시켰다. 참고로 스코틀랜드는 트럼프 대통령 모친의 고향이다.

 

한국 여자프로 미국에서 활약 높이 평가

도널드 트럼프 대통령은 한국 여자프로들의 미국에서 활약상을 높이 평가하고 있다. 2017년 제1기 대통령 업무수행 당시 한국 국회에서 연설 도중 미국 뉴저지 소재 트럼프 내셔날 골프장에서 개최된 US오픈에서 우승한 박성현과 아마추어로 참가해 2위를 차지한 최혜진을 언급하면서 한국 여자프로들의 실력이 뛰어나 10위권 이내에 8명이 한국 선수라고 칭찬을 아끼지 않았다.

 

이번 이재명 대통령과 트럼프 대통령 정상회담에서 한국 여자프로 골퍼들의 활약과 골프에 대한 열정과 연습량을 높이 평가했다. 민족적인 DNA도 탁월하지만, 한국 여자선수들은 아침부터 저녁까지 연습하는 열정적이고 목표달성을 위해 매진하는 여성들이라고 치하를 아끼지 않았다고 한다.

골프는 트럼프 대통령에게 권력 유지와 자신의 건강을 지켜주는 파수꾼으로 보고 있다. 정치적인 회담이나 정책 결정도 골프 카트에서 하는 경우가 많다고 한다. 해외 순방을 제외하고는 주말, 주중을 가리지 않고 골프를 즐긴다. 보도에 따르면 2주에 3번은 필드를 찾는 것으로 나와 있다.

 

한 라운드당 5시간 이상 걸리니 총 15시간을 코스에서 보내는 것이 다. 드라이버 스윙은 아웃인 궤도를 그리며 백스윙은 짧고 팔로우를 많이 해주어 높은 탄도로 볼을 보낸다. 아이언 스윙은 강력한 다운블로우 스윙으로 그린에 볼이 안착한 다음 스핀이 걸리도록 하여 핀하이 장면을 자주 연출한다. 퍼팅과 벙커 실력은 완전 싱글 골퍼 수준이다. 비록 나이는 80세이지만 몸의 유연성과 파워, 집중력 모두 60대 실력을 겸비하고 있다.

Donald J. Trump, the 47th President of the United States, is regarded as one of the most powerful global leaders and one of the most admired presidents in the world. He holds the distinction of being the oldest and wealthiest president in U.S. history, as well as only the second to serve non-consecutive presidential terms in office.

Pushing forward his “America First” policy, President Trump has been at the forefront of politics, diplomacy, national defense, tariffs, immigration reform, and initiatives for global peace. Under his leadership, the U.S. economy has grown vigorously, and landmark trade agreements have been secured. He has also played a mediating role in global conflicts—from efforts to end the war in Ukraine, to seeking peace in the Middle East and curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Many expect that he will soon meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to discuss peace on the Korean Peninsula, denuclearization, and the preservation of the DMZ’s ecosystem.

On August 25th, at the White House in Washington, D.C., President Trump hosted South Korean President Lee Jae-myung for a summit that concluded successfully. As a Korean citizen, I express my respect for President Trump’s generosity and the cordial, friendly treatment he extended to President Lee.

The unexpected icebreaker of the summit is Golf. What might have been a stiff, formal meeting was transformed into a warm and friendly exchange. President Lee suggested, “Soon, I hope you will meet Kim Jong Un, open a path for dialogue, and even build a ‘Trump World Golf Course’ in North Korea so that I may join you for a golf round.” To this, President Trump responded with a bright smile: “That’s good. We can do it.” The two leaders then shook hands, agreeing to play their respective roles as peace-maker and peace-supporter.

Although the summit did not yet realize “golf diplomacy,” both sides hinted that such an opportunity may arise in the future. With President Trump expected to attend the upcoming APEC summit in Gyeongju in South Korea this October, hopes are high that golf may soon take center stage in diplomacy.

President Lee also presented a customized golf putter to the golfloving Trump, crafted by the Korean brand Gold Five. Engraved with “45th & 47th President Donald Trump,” the club was tailored to his physique. It featured a 360g head, 34-inch shaft, and leather grip—a gesture warmly received by Trump.

Donald Trump is not only known for politics but also for his lifelong passion for golf. Famous for the slogan “Make America Great Again,” Trump is widely recognized as a golf enthusiast and the proud owner of 18 golf courses and resorts around the world.

According to Golfweek (May 2025), Trump owns 18 prestigious courses—11 in the U.S., 2 in Scotland, 1 in Ireland, 4 in the UAE, and 1 under construction in Indonesia. He also has projects planned in Bali and Dubai. The PGA Tour is scheduled to return to his Trump National Doral Miami course in April–May 2026.

In 2005, he even published a 320-page instructional book titled “TRUMP: The Best Golf Advice I Ever Received.” Once carrying a handicap index as low as 2.6, Trump is now 79 years old and is believed to play at around a 9–11 handicap—still ranking him among the best golfing presidents in U.S. history. His record includes 18 club championships, 5 holes-in-one, and a best round of 66 from the championship tees.

Known for his baseball-style swing and powerful drives, he could once hit 280 yards off the tee. Even today, he averages 200~230 meters, making him a long hitter among seniors. Professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau recently described Trump’s swing as “machine-like,” praising his accuracy, iron play, and putting. His golfing strengths are attributed to a solid grip, a strong body-driven swing, excellent bunker play, and brilliant putting.

Presidential golf diplomacy has proven to be surprisingly effective, and Trump has often used golf as a stage for international relations. During his first term, he played golf with Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe five times, alternating between courses in the U.S. and Japan. In 2019, after a round at Mobara Country Club in Chiba, the two leaders even shared photos online—Abe gifting Trump a golden Honma driver.

In July 2025, while in Scotland for EU tariff negotiations, Trump played at his Trump Turnberry course with his son Eric and U.S. Ambassador Warren Stephens. Shortly after, he met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his Aberdeen course. In South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa brought legendary PGA golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen to his summit with Trump, using golf to spark a highly successful dialogue.

Interestingly, Scotland holds a personal connection for Trump— it is his mother’s birthplace.

 

Admiration for Korean Women Golfers

Trump has often expressed admiration for the success of Korean women golfers on the LPGA Tour. During his first term in 2017, while addressing Korea’s National Assembly, he praised Park Sung-hyun’s U.S. Open victory and Choi Hye-jin’s runner-up finish at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. At that time, he lauded the dominance of Korean players, with eight ranked inside the world’s top ten.

At the recent summit with President Lee, Trump again praised Korean golfers, commending their dedication, discipline, and relentless practice. He remarked that beyond talent, it is their tireless training from dawn to dusk that makes them champions.

 

Golf as Trump’s Lifelong Hobby

For Trump, golf is more than a pastime—it is stress relief, a wellspring of new ideas, and a vital social networking tool. On the course, he engages with world leaders and business executives alike. Golf, for Trump, is both a shield for health and a platform for power. It is said that many of his policy discussions and even political decisions are made from a golf cart.

Reports suggest that he plays three times every two weeks, spending more than 15 hours on the course. His swing style— short backswing, extended follow-through produces a high launch, while his irons land with spin, often stopping pin-high. His putting and bunker play remain at single-digit handicap level.

Though approaching 80, Trump retains the flexibility, strength, and focus of a much younger athlete—qualities that continue to fuel his love affair with golf.
